December Thought of the Month

At this time of year, we're usually focused on holiday tasks: shopping for presents, decorating, travel plans, etc. But it should also be a time of begin preparing for a new year. Without a plan, we are at the mercy of Life's currents.

We all had dreams of what we would be when we grew up. Chance, circumstances, the luck of the draw, all sorts of things and events affect the course of our lives. Chief of those are our choices. Each of us is where we are today because of them, good and bad.

Some of those choices meant we had to set aside a cherished dream. The good news is we will be making choices for the rest of our lives, so we can change direction at any time. If we don't like where we are, we can set a new goal and change where we end up in the future.

Each of us is one decision away from the future we want, so we must never give up on our dreams. Think of the feel good stories we sometimes get in the news. Athletes rising above their limitations to win medals. Seniors achieving their dreams of going to college and getting a degree. Actors getting well-deserved awards after years of hope and effort. Every one of them could have decided to give up, stick with the status quo, or settle in where life had landed them. Each chose a dream and worked to achieve it, even if it took years and they already had years behind them.

And it's not too late for us. In this season of giving, give yourself a gift. Revive an old dream or take up a new one, and reach for a different future.
